LHH’s impact is measured in the significant intervention that our financial assistance brings to the lives of ordinary people. In 2014, the League helped 349 individuals/families with one-off grants.
LHH grants range from £50 to £250 maximum. Of the grants awarded, the average amount was £152 and the most frequently awarded amount was £100.
Grants were awarded towards the purchase of essential household furnishings such as beds, sofas and wardrobes; white electrical goods, clothing/footwear as well as contributing towards utility bills/heating oil, hospital travel and daily living expenses.
Here are some testimonials from our end recipients and third party sponsors:
'I am writing this letter to thank you for the recent grant from yourselves in support of my illness. Since the beginning of this year my life has been turned upside down and my family have been put under a great deal of stress but are giving me great support. From a hardworking man to not being able to work has been hard to accept and has put myself and my family under immense financial strain, the money that you have sent to me is very much appreciated.’
‘I would really like to take this opportunity to thank you for the generous award you gave me to help me with my move from supported accommodation into my new flat. This has been a huge help to me. It has played a big part in me furthering my recovery. I am now 2 years and 2 months abstinent from alcohol and heroin addiction and working full time in a voluntary position and looking forward to what is a bright future.'
'Thank you so much for the gift of £100 of which I bought a beautiful VAX hoover and the remaining £40 will put towards a memory foam mattress. It will take a long time but that £40 is a big big help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.’
'I write to thank you for your kind award of £120 towards the cost of carpeting for xxx’s flat. His main aim at the moment is to have a home that he can feel safe and happy in and finally having his carpets laid has certainly made him very happy (and warm). He is very appreciative of your help and has asked me to pass on his thanks also.'
'Your generosity has made a huge difference to the life of xxx. He no longer has to struggle to wash his clothing and bedding and says that his life has improved dramatically since he had the washing machine installed. Xxx is extremely grateful, he told me when I spoke to him last week that he is still in shock because he did not know that people could be so generous.'
'You recently awarded xxx £100 for Essential Household Items. From this money, he has purchased a bed, a mattress, and a duvet set. Xxx has asked me to compile this letter to say thank you. He is very appreciative of the help you have given him and the items he has been able to acquire have made a profound difference to his life, and have greatly enhanced his comfort and wellbeing.'
'I am writing to say thank you for the cheque you kindly donated for xxx to purchase her daughter a bed and mattress. Xxx is very grateful for this and her daughter is thrilled that she will be getting a new bed.'
As you can see, the League makes a significant impact on the day-to-day lives of those who are eligible for our support.
